The epic extreme skiing descent in the Mammoth Lakes area. Bloody mountain and its namesake couloir is the big fish for backcountry skiing descents in the Mammoth Lakes area. The summit is approximately 12,500 feet, towering over the valley near the town of Mammoth. You'll park your car a depressing distance from the base of this mountain, necessitating a huge approach and creating a big day for most. Rad, fit backcountry enthusiasts will nail this sucker car to car in 7 hours. Reasonably fit people coming from sea level (eg. Pasadena) should expect a 10 - 12 hour day, assuming good conditions and weather. I wont leave beta, because this descent has been written up in every backcountry skiing guidebook out there. I'll only recommend the route, as someone who has done it, and say that it lives up to the massive hype that it gets! For fit expert skiers comfortable on no-falls and consistent 45 degree terrain, this should be at the top of your list!
