Approach shoes are tennis shoes with sticky rubber soles. As such, they can be very comfortable for class 3 and 4 scrambling, and even low 5th class routes; many guides climb up to 5.8 in these. They are far more comfortable than rock shoes, are lighter than hiking boots, and for many summer day trips are an all-in-one solution. However, the soft rubber wears out much quicker than typical soles, and these shoes are no better than normal tennis shoes on snow or ice.
